SCOTUS ANNOUNCES LANDMARK DECISION ON LBGTQ EMPLOYEE RIGHTS

In a landmark decision, the United States Supreme Court held that federal law prohibits job discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. The case concerned Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which bars employment discrimination based on race, religion, national origin and sex. In a 6-3 decision the Supreme Court held that discrimination because of sex applied to LGBTQ workers. While the Illinois Human Rights Act as amended in 2006 prohibits employers from discriminating on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity, most LGBTQ workers live in states that do not currently have the same anti-discrimination laws. This ruling will have a significant impact on employment discrimination law across the United States
